Are Nurses in High Demand?

For years, experts in the healthcare field have sounded the alarm on the high demand for nurses nationwide. Based on projections by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the country will need additional 203,200 registered nurses (RNs) each year from now through 2031. Nurses are in high demand across Canada; for this reason, there are several Canadian immigration pathways for nurses to choose from. As a nurse, you may be qualified to migrate to Canada as a skilled worker through one of the many economic immigration programs at both the federal and provincial levels.

Registered nurse vacancies across the NHS in England are up 10% in a year, new data has revealed. The figures published in March 2023 by NHS Digital showed that there were 43,619 nurse vacancies in the health service during the quarter ending December 2022. In Australia, the Health Workforce Australia predicts that there will be a shortage of over 100,000 nurses by 2025, and in Europe, there is a ‘brain drain’ of doctors and nurses who move to countries with better working conditions and pay, leaving other countries with shortages.

Globally, there is an estimated shortage of 13 million nurses. This number is high, and educational institutions such as Donnish Hub and its partners are challenged to train more nurses to fill the gap.

There is a global shortage of health workers, in particular nurses and midwives, who represent more than 50% of the current shortage in health workers.

What is Nursing Profession About?

Nursing is a challenging and rewarding profession. Nursing is a professional practice discipline, which offers a valuable service to the public by working with individuals, families, groups, and communities to develop and implement strategies to meet healthcare needs.  Caring is a central and dominant feature of nursing.

Nurse practitioners are health practitioners, who can work on their own, or with physicians and other health professionals, to provide care across a person’s life span. This includes diagnosing and treating illnesses, ordering and interpreting tests, prescribing medications, and performing medical procedures. This means that doctors are not the only ones who can diagnose an illness, write prescriptions or refer a patient to a specialist — well-trained nurse practitioners can, too, thereby filling gaps as the family doctor shortage grows.

Therefore, nurse practitioners can perform most types of treatments needed by walk-in clinic patients, including diagnosing illnesses and injuries, making referrals to specialists, and prescribing most medications, and they can operate without physician supervision if they have appropriate training and certifications.

What a BSc. in Nursing in Canada or Ireland Will Do For You?

A degree in nursing in Canada or Ireland will prepare professional nurses who will:

• Meet professional practice requirements as identified in the Professional Standards for Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners and other bodies
